Explore Aswan’s Highlights in a Day

Embark on a fascinating day tour to two of Aswan's iconic landmarks. Visit the impressive High Dam, a modern engineering marvel that tames the mighty Nile, and discover the ancient secrets of the Unfinished Obelisk, showcasing the incredible craftsmanship of Egypt’s stonemasons. A perfect blend of history and culture awaits you.

1. High Dam (Aswan High Dam)

  • Location: Aswan, Egypt
  • About: The High Dam is a massive engineering marvel that was completed in 1970. It was built across the Nile River to control flooding, generate hydroelectric power, and provide irrigation to the surrounding areas. The dam has significantly altered the landscape of Egypt, creating Lake Nasser, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. The project was initiated under the leadership of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, and it took over a decade to complete.
  • What to Expect: Visitors can explore the dam's structure and learn about its engineering significance, as well as its impact on Egypt's development. The dam offers spectacular views of Lake Nasser and the surrounding desert. There's also a museum on-site that provides insights into the dam's construction and its benefits to Egypt.
  • Things to See:

    • The dam’s massive concrete walls
    • The lake’s panoramic views
    • The hydroelectric power plant
    • The nearby Aswan High Dam Monument
    • The museum with exhibits on the dam's construction and its role in modern Egypt

2. Unfinished Obelisk

  • Location: Northern Aswan, Egypt
  • About: The Unfinished Obelisk is located in a quarry and provides an intriguing glimpse into the process of obelisk construction in ancient Egypt. It was intended to be the largest obelisk ever erected in Egypt, standing at around 42 meters (138 feet) tall and weighing an estimated 1,200 tons. However, it was abandoned in the quarry due to cracks that appeared in the granite during the carving process.
  • What to Expect: Visitors can see the massive, partially carved obelisk still embedded in the quarry, offering insight into the techniques and tools used by ancient Egyptians to shape such enormous stones. The Unfinished Obelisk is a testament to the skill and ambition of ancient Egyptian stonemasons.
  • Things to See:

    • The giant obelisk still attached to the bedrock
    • The carving tools and techniques visible on the surface
    • Nearby quarries and other obelisks in various stages of completion
    • The surrounding desert landscape

Tips for Visiting:

  • Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Aswan is during the cooler months, from October to April, as temperatures can become quite hot in summer.
